Help Zanzibar grow seaweed so fewer fish die
Created by EthicalSeafoodResearch
Hi, I'm Wasseem. I founded Ethical Seafood Research, and we work with fishing and fish farming communities across East Africa on one big question: can people earn a living from the sea without killing so many animals? In Zanzibar, the answer might be seaweed. Women like the farmer in this photo grow it in the shallows at low tide. No fish are caught, no fish are farmed, and the seaweed ends up in food, cosmetics and fertiliser. We're working with local partners to help seaweed farming pay better, so it becomes a real alternative to fishing for more families.
Why it's good for animals Billions of fish are caught or farmed every year, and most of them die slowly. Every family that can make a good living from seaweed is a family with less reason to fish. Seaweed farms also give shelter to little sea creatures, which is a nice bonus.
What your vote pays for If we win, the money goes straight to seedlings and ropes for 15 new farmers OR safety kit such as reef shoes and sun hats for 20 farmers OR a seaweed cooking day for at least 30 families. It's small, but it's real and we can show you exactly where it went.
What you'll see We'll post updates from the farms with photos and maybe some short videos from our filming trip, so you can meet the farmers and see what your money did.
