Migori FarmLab

My idea is to develop a small FarmLab in my community using a family-owned piece of land where I can showcase how nature, animals and technology can interact together and the potential of this relationship to build resilience and create sustainable food systems in the community. So, you can look at my project as a learning space which contains local climate resilient crops e.g. sorghum, plants that attract birds and bees (pollinators), as well as food trees like mangoes and guava. All this will be done while employing regenerative farming method to promote biodiversity, food systems change and environmental sustainability. Through Migori FarmLab, I aim to promote community-based solutions that can be emulated and copied by others to avoid unnecessary deaths that are attributed to hunger, drought and malnutrition in our local communities. While at it, I shall be deploying simple digital technology for purposes of collecting data, tracking and documenting progress such AI, Google Sheet and PlantNet. This is meant to demonstrate how technology can be used to improve our ecosystem and food situation even as we strive to build a resilient and sustainable future for rural communities such as mine. I also intend to print simple flyers and pamphlets to guide those who'd wish to replicate my model in their respective farms. I will use the microgrant ($250) to buy seeds/seedlings ($100),basic farm tools ($35), compost/soil improvement ($25), signage/education materials ($25),to document, track, analyse project's progress ($40). I shall use the balance ($25) to compile project report for purposes of sharing with stakeholders and also on contigencies.
